The Youth Are the Church Leaders of Today

For many, this month has started a bit rocky. Plans have gone awry and backup plans have forcibly been put in play. So, this Sabbath, I encourage you to come and be filled by God as you enjoy youth Sabbath. I also want to take a second to give a shoutout to all of my fellow young people reading this newsletter. This verse from 1 Timothy 4:12 has been my mantra as people (though well-meaning) tell me that I look too young, that I look like I am 10 years younger than I actually am. Here it is: “Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.” We are to learn, yes. But simultaneously, God calls us to set an example.

Please understand me: The youth are not the church leaders of tomorrow, the youth are the church leaders of today. Let God be enough for you and your speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity will follow. I’m praying for each and every one of you.

Adults, as you recharge on the amazing gift that is the day of rest, I want to also challenge you.

When you see a young person in the foyer, or in the sanctuary, go say hi. Tell them you’re glad they’re here. You don’t have to facilitate a theological discourse or correct them, just simply talk to them. You know that you love young people, but do your best to make sure they know as well.

That’s it. That’s my challenge to you. It’s simple, but God is an expert at using simple, meager means and making it into something extravagant. I’m praying that God will use you, dear friend, to bless someone this Sabbath day. If God can feed a multitude with five loaves and two fish, then he can change a life with a conversation.

With expectation,
Jonny
